Behaviour Does Not Fill Out Rating Scales

A case for experimental psychology, functional relations, and animal models as tools for explaining behaviour.

An animal faces two options. One offers a small but immediate reward; the other, a larger reward that requires waiting. What will it do?

The answer is not requested in a questionnaire. It does not depend on how the animal describes its intentions, the image it wishes to present of itself, or its ability to turn a decision into a coherent narrative. The choice happens. It can be observed, measured, repeated, and compared. What remains invisible are the relations that organise that choice: the weight of delay, the value of the reward, previous experience, and the conditions under which the decision occurs.

This is one of the traditions that made psychology an experimental science. A quantitative, laboratory-based psychology interested not only in what individuals say, but in what they do; not only in descriptions, but in relations between conditions and behaviour.

An important part of contemporary psychology relies on self-reports, rating scales, and verbal categories. These are valuable instruments for describing experiences and patterns of behaviour. But describing a pattern and explaining the process that produces it are not the same thing.

Experimental research on behaviour begins from a different requirement. It seeks to identify functional relations, that is, systematic relations between what happens in the environment and what an organism does. It changes conditions and observes consequences. It asks what happens when a reward increases, when a delay becomes longer, when the required effort changes, or when a consequence ceases to occur.

The aim is not merely to describe differences between individuals. It is to discover regularities, build models, test predictions, and determine the limits of those predictions. If changing a delay systematically changes choice, we begin to make visible a regularity that could not be observed directly. It is in this context that animal models occupy a fundamental place.

Research with non-human animals makes it possible to study processes such as learning, memory, attention, and choice with a degree of experimental control that is difficult to achieve in other contexts. It allows aspects of the environment to be manipulated systematically, procedures to be repeated, and changes in behaviour to be followed over time. It also makes it possible to separate behaviour from the narratives produced about it. Not because human report is irrelevant, but because reporting is itself behaviour, subject to memory, expectations, social conventions, and the characteristics of the question itself.

Animal models are not reduced versions of human beings. One species is not a simple substitute for another. The value of comparison lies precisely in identifying what remains constant, what varies, and under what conditions a regularity can be generalised. Differences between species are not a secondary obstacle. They are part of the scientific problem.

The history of psychology shows the usefulness of this tradition. Much of what we know about behaviour, learning, memory, and decision-making has its origins in experimental research with animals. This knowledge later helped provide foundations for teaching methods, behaviour-modification techniques, and different forms of psychological intervention.

These applications did not arise from a direct and immediate passage from the laboratory to intervention. They became possible through decades of fundamental research, replication of findings, revision of concepts, and adaptation to new problems.

A science of behaviour begins by observing what organisms do. It seeks to know under what conditions they do it, how that behaviour changes, and how far that change can be predicted.

Before naming a process, it must be demonstrated. Before explaining, one must manipulate, compare, and test. Behaviour does not fill out rating scales.
